What should I do regarding bills before I move out?

No matter if you are renting or selling, it is a must to be prepared regarding your bills when moving out so you don't end up paying anything that the new homeowners/tenants are using. Take a note of your water, gas and electric metres including a photo of these so you have evidence as well as logging these with your providers.

Make sure when you ring them to notify of the move at least 48 hours before you vacate the property. If you pass on your contact information plus your forwarding address if any issues arise they can be dealt with. It is always best to notify the agent who is assisting the move of these providers so they can pass the information on, as well as your forwarding address.

When you arrive in your new home, again make sure you take pictures of the metre readings, incase there is any confusion.

Make sure to notify your local council regarding your council tax, as well as your broadband provider, bank, DVLA, TV license and Royal Mail. Most of these will be a straight forward transfer and usually can do these via mail or telephone.
